ESF 2004: Preparatory Meeting in London
Calling all social movements, activists, community groups, social centres, NGOs, trade unions, campaigners. Calling all anarchists, socialists, feminists, libertarians, Marxists, autonomists, eco-warriors. Calling all anti-war, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, anti-imperialist, gay, lesbian, black, Asian, animal rights activists (apologies if you don't feel represented). Do you believe that 'another world is possible', or even 'other worlds are possible'? Then this meeting is for you:Preparatory Assembly for the European Social Forum 2004 to held in the UK.
London 13th / 14th December 2003 Start Saturday 9.30am. Ends Sunday 1pm.
Venue: City Hall, The Queens Walk, London SE1 2AA
The European Social Forum is not an organisation, not a united front platform, but "an open meeting place for reflective thinking, democratic debate of ideas, formulation of proposals, free exchange of experiences and inter-linking for effective action, by groups and movements of civil society that are opposed to neo-liberalism and to domination of the world by capital and any form of imperialism, and are committed to building a society centred on the human person". (From the Charter of Principles).
Representatives of the European social movements that were involved in organising the ESF in Florence and Paris will come to London to deliver their evaluation of the ESF in Paris and agree with the UK groups on a process acceptable to all for the ESF in the UK 2004. The European groups will not agree any process foisted on UK social movements - they want everyone to feel represented and involved in the process who wants to be. It is important that as many groups, networks, organisations and individuals as possible are represented at this meeting so as to lock into the organising process the diversity we need.
The meeting will discuss many things. A provisional agenda will be put forward by a Volunteer Group, which has been set up consisting of delegates from trade unions, NGOs, anti-capitalist groups, alternative media. It will meet on Wednesday 10th December, 6pm, at City Hall. Just for your info, this group is not dominated by the SWP or Globalise Resistance. We have successfully ensured that they are a minority force so there is no reason to be afraid and not get involved.
To help provide activists with some background, those of us involved in the UK social forum movement are hosting a:

World Press Freedom Day
More reporters are currently imprisoned in Turkey than in any other country in the world. Only a matter of weeks ago lawyers failed to persuade a Turkish court to release a 76-year-old journalist from a Turkish internet news station.
World Press Freedom Day on Friday May 3, 2013 is being marked in Britain by a rally to highlight the dangers facing journalists in Turkey and in this podcast, Nicholas Jones speaks to Barry White, Organiser at the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom, and Sam Bamford, the TUC's policy officer for Eastern Europe and Africa about the importance of a campaign to highlight international press freedom.
The World Press Freedom Day rally is being staged by the National Union of Journalists at the NUJ head office, Gray’s Inn Road, London WC1 on Thursday May 2, 6pm-8pm.

The UK launch of a 'European Citizens' Initiative' calling for EU rules against concentration of media power will take place on Thursday March 21 from 11:00am – 12:30pm in Committee Room 4A at the House of Lords, London. Guest speakers will include actor and activist Hugh Grant (pictured), media consultant Claire Enders, Professor Steven Barnett, Barry McCall (President of the NUJ) and Marc Gruber (Director of the European Federation of Journalists).
A European Citizens' Initiative is an official petition, like a Downing Street petition. If it succeeds in gathering a million signatures across the EU, the Commission is obliged to respond.
This petition calls for the EU to act to protect media pluralism and press freedom.

MEDIA MANIFESTO
DATELINE: 26/3/10
The media’s job is to inform and entertain us but we rely on them too to tell us what our rulers and representatives are up to. In the run-up to the Iraq war the government used spin and disinformation in the media to create panic and mislead people. The truth is coming out now, but we need stronger, more independent media to be able to scrutinise governments and make informed choices.
